Primary Sports Day!

Don’t forget if you have a child in Years 1-6 that on Monday you will need to make your way to Borneo Sports Arena for our Primary Sports Day!

Parents should drop their children off at the venue between 7:30-7:45am, if you are there before 7:30, please do not just leave your child as staff will be busy setting things up for the day and will not be able to supervise them.

Students should be wearing their PE uniform and sports shoes. No need to bring a hat as we will be undercover for the duration of the event.

You will need to pack a small bag that will contain their water bottle and some snacks to eat during the day. There will be no lunch break and there will be no school canteen meals provided.

Students will need to carry a water bottle with them throughout the day to stay hydrated and energised for all the amazing events they will be taking part in!

It is sure to be a fantastic day full of exciting sporting action so please be sure to stick around and cheer on the children!

If you can’t stay, please make sure you arrive at 12:00pm to collect your child. They will not return to school afterwards.

See below the schedule of the day.

U13 FOBISIA GAMES REPORT (Continued)

Day 3 – Boys Football and Girls Basketball

Having finished third overall in Basketball, the boy’s spirits were high. They looked a little tired, understandably they worked very hard to earn that podium finish. We had a team meeting after dinner, discussing their roles in the upcoming football matches the next day. After the meeting they looked fired up and enthusiastic as always. Unfortunately, Dogyeom fell ill that day and will not be able to participate in the matches. I told Dogyeom to not worry too much and wished him to get well soon.

Match day. The boys were ready in their football kits and there were smiles on their faces, excited to get the matches going. We had another team meeting after breakfast to finalise the team preparations and gave them a heads up of what may come during the football matches. During their first match, I tried to tweak their play style from the sidelines as some of them played slightly off position. After some tweaking they were more organised and played better as a team. At times, they were playing slightly defensively although they were capable of creating opportunities in front of goal, so I had to encourage them to press forward with more attacks. The boys played with a ‘never say die’ attitude and continued to persevere in all of the matches that day. From the pressing strategies implemented, the Vipers managed to bag goals from Aaron, Benson and Taylor.

Aldrich displayed fantastic athleticism as a goalkeeper, he positioned himself well and made crucial saves ensuring that no balls went through into goal. He was the heart of the team, ensuring the balls were being passed to the wings as he tried to open space in the center of the field to create opportunities. Benson impressed me as a defender and a winger, he consistently marks the opposing team player in his area and passes the ball forward to the attackers. Taylor was quick on his feet, dribbling by the sidelines and often cut into space to place his shots. Because of that, the opposing teams are aware of Taylor’s abilities and have always been marked closely. Ian Zi, our team captain, worked relentlessly across all positions as he tried his very best to provide support showing strength and perseverance. There is so much potential in this team, not just their abilities but also their approach in attitude and mentality in facing adversity. At times when they were feeling down and tired, I reminded them to not give up and show what they are made of. Indeed they have played with passion and determination.

Overall, all of the boys played well as a team and despite losing most of the matches to teams with larger numbers, they managed to earn a win from one. There were smiles at the end and everyone knew they had given their best. The experience gained is definitely valuable to everyone and from here we can work on our strengths and weaknesses. The U13 FOBISIA team had a great outing overall and I am proud of the character, perseverance and determination in their performances. Go go Vipers!!!

Girls Basketball

It was a tough ask for the girls to take to the basketball court for their final competition on Day 3 having had an exhausting day of football the day before and as one of the smaller teams they’d naturally used up a lot of their energy reserves getting to this point. Still, as always, the level of enthusiasm, optimism and excitement from all the girls was sky high and there was no doubt they were going to give it their best effort.

Like the boys the day before, the girls got off to a winning start with a 10-6 victory over Help International School. Mischa was explosive in her attacking play, driving fast down the court in her attempts to get to the basket and often drawing the foul or sinking the lay-up in the process.

They then had two back to back games which was always going to be tough. After being the dominant team all through the match against Uplands they suffered a heartbreaking defeat when a last second buzzer beater shot somehow found its way into the net for Uplands to steal the win from the Vipers 10-9.

How they responded to that loss though was incredible. They picked themselves up and showed tremendous character stepping straight back on the court to put in a phenomenal performance against Kathmandu who were the team to beat in the competition. The team were ferocious in defence with Janice, Kimberly and Amantha working tirelessly to track the opposition. Helena and Olivia gave us a good physical presence under the basket with Dasha and Melanie also supporting all over the court. The team came back from behind to take the lead due to some excellent shooting and work in attack from Amanda and Mischa. Unfortunately, the team eventually succumbed to the pressure of the larger squad size of Kathmandu and lost 15-12. However the team really did themselves proud and I received many compliments from other coaches, impressed as to how well the girls played.

After such a tough and physically draining match the girls didn’t really have much left to give in the final game, yet somehow they still kept going and picked up a draw to finish their first FOBISIA experience.

Finishing the day with 1 win, 1 draw and 2 losses for the tournament saw them finish in 4th place. Certainly not the position they deserved but I have no doubt that the team’s performance in this tournament can serve as a stepping stone for future success. They can learn from their experience and build on their strengths to improve on their game in the future. Overall, the team should be proud of their hard work and dedication in representing the school at the FOBISIA Games.

That evening it was the Gala Dinner and the team were finally able to rest and reflect on their amazing achievements as they were treated to a feast, some fire dancing and of course the FOBISIA Games Highlights videos with many a Viper having a starring role in.

Final thoughts

What an amazing trip! Being able to watch and cheer on our U13 athletes as they swam, sprinted and raced up and down basketball courts was a hugely memorable experience. The teamwork and resilience of our students was evident throughout the trip, and no matter what happened the students were there to make eachother (and myself) laugh and remain motivated for the challenges ahead. Despite normally gravitating towards a book, I found myself cheering from the side of basketball courts, and watching with tense anticipation as our students ran across the finish line for athletics. Every single student put 100% effort into getting the most out of this amazing trip, and I hope they enjoyed it as much as I did! – Ms Young – (Viper Recruit 2023)

As always, I continue to be impressed with the performances and character of our FOBISIA athletes by what our students are able to achieve as a result of hardwork and dedication. They all achieved countless personal goals as well as team goals that we established before departing and for that myself, Mr Richie and Ms Young are incredibly proud.

Please join me in congratulating all of our 2023 U13 FOBISIA Vipers!!

Liga SupaRimau Wrap-up – Saturday 11th March

Well, that’s a wrap on our first season of Liga SupaRimau! Every time a KIS Vipers Team took to the field you could be sure that they were going to give it their absolute all. Players have had the opportunity to learn so many new skills from the experience. Their football skills and understanding of play will only continue to grow and develop now that they have access to regular playing opportunities and the introduction of regular training for Season B. They have also learned valuable life lessons that will extend far beyond the football field.

Firstly, the importance of teamwork. Whether on the football field, in the classroom, or out in the world we can achieve so much more when we work together with others with everyone taking responsibility for their role and working together to achieve a goal. During moments of difficulty players learnt the importance of still being kind to one and another and supporting each other even when mistakes were made.

They learnt to persevere, because sometimes sport can be tough and we don’t always win. They never quit on themselves or the team and showed resilience and determination to continue each and every week. The Vipers played all their matches under the banner of good sportsmanship and fair play and were outstanding representatives for KIS in the community which I am very proud of.

Congratulations to last week’s Players of the Match –

Under 10 A’s – June Ann

Under 10 B’s – Howard

Under 12’s Varshal

I’d like to thank our Season A coaches, Roberto Leone (Under 10 A’s), Andy Clifford (Under 10 B’s) and Stuart Bromley & Benoit Goossens (Under 12’s) for their patience and expertise in guiding the teams through their first football season.

A massive thank you also to the parents for the early morning wake ups to get your children to the games and all the support on the sideline each week.

The only disappointing piece of news is that we have to wait nearly 2 whole months before football is back on the Saturday schedule. No matter, our teams can enjoy their ‘off-season’ now for a few weeks before their ‘pre-season’ training starts in April!

Closing date for registrations is THIS Monday 20th March. After I have all registrations I will send out information for the fee payments.

FOBISIA Updates:

A reminder that even though normal ECAs will not be running next week, we will still hold the following sessions for the Primary FOBISIA Games Team.
