From the Head of Primary 18.02.2023
I would like to start by saying a huge thank you to all those parents who attended the Primary Learning Conferences this week. As I said in last week’s newsletter, it is so important to keep up to date with your child’s academic, social and emotional progress and we all appreciate you taking the time to do so. If you were unable to attend for any reason, please contact your child’s class teacher to arrange a meeting.
A reminder that we ask students to bring in healthy snacks and lunches. At KIS, we advocate for healthy eating. Good nutrition and a balanced diet help children grow up healthy. Following a healthy diet and living an active lifestyle will help your children in plenty of areas. From brain development, general wellbeing, sleeping patterns and physical strength, the benefits are vast and fruitful!
Please refer to our Healthy Eating Policy for more guidance. Also don’t forget only Y6 students can buy directly from the canteen. All other students MUST pre-order their food or bring their own.

As last Saturday was International Women in STEM day, children in school have learnt about some famous scientists:
Year 2 learnt about Jane Colden: a botanist. She was America’s first female botanist, in the 1720s. She learnt about plants, drew them and published a book that won an award. Many people loved her book and learnt about the local plants because of her. Our year 2 children then became mini-botanists and are learning more about how to grow plants and how they disperse their seeds.
Year 3 learnt about Margaret Hamilton, who is the computer engineer who created the term ‘software engineering’. She was the head of the team who wrote the code that programmed Apollo – the space shuttle that took people to the moon and allowed them to walk on it. They then learnt about Fakhirah Khairuddin – a Malaysian lady, currently working for Tesla. Like Margaret Hamilton, she is a computer engineer. She has also worked in aeronautics, helping rockets to accelerate and for launch. She has written code and won competitions for her design of robotic arms. Year 3 then had a go at doing some computer coding of their own!
.

Finally, year 6 researched a range of scientists and presented their work to the rest of Year 6 and some of the teachers. It was wonderful to hear about the diverse range of people, their careers in science and contributions to the world both in the past and currently. The people they presented were:
- Milena Salgado
- Lydia Villa-Komaroff
- Mary Anning
- Tu Youyou
- Jane Goodall
- Maria Sibylla Merian
- Edith Clarke
- Valentina Tereshkova
- Marie Curie
Now we look forward to the AIMS Science Competition, coming soon! Watch this space!

The spotlight is on…..
Year 5 who have been working extremely hard at learning the Ukulele over this term and on Thursday demonstrated their learning through a group performance. Unbelievably they sang and played, which I know from personal experience is very difficult. Some groups performed Happy Birthday and others learned Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.

This week, in our celebration assembly, we learnt about Women in Science and found out about an exciting initiative that the Eco Warriors are starting. Ask your children what challenge they have been set by the Eco Warrior committee. As always, we celebrated the Stars of the Week and gave out Bronze, Silver and Gold awards!

We are lucky to have the opportunity to participate in the FOBISIA Primary Art competition for 2023! The theme for this competition this year is “My culture through my eyes”. The competition is being hosted by The British School, Mongolia and all entries must be submitted through the QR code shown on the poster. Good luck to anyone who enters!
Next week, KS2 are looking forward to attending the 50th Anniversary assembly. The first of many events to celebrate 50 marvellous years of KIS! As well, the Y1 students will be off on a trip to the Field Skills centre as part of their Adventure Awaits topic. Hear more about that next week.
Finally a ‘Save the date’ for our Primary Sports Day on the 20th March.
Have a wonderful weekend.
Take care
