From the Head of Primary 26.11.2022
It was great to see so many students and their families at the beach clean on Sunday. A very impressive amount of rubbish was collected. Beach clean-ups are vital to mitigate the problem caused by ocean debris and the danger that plastic pollution poses to marine life. They also bring people face-to-face with the reality of plastic pollution which will hopefully encourage volunteers to assess plastic usage in their homes and communities, and therefore consider modifying their own behavior.
So remember:

The Year 6 students did a great job of presenting their anti-bullying presentations to the other classes. I am so proud of them.

Y1 Trip went on their first trip of the year….
As part of our ‘Rumble in the Ocean’ topic, we visited the MERC (Marine Ecology Research Centre) on Gaya Island on Wednesday. The children had a fantastic day learning about local marine life and the work MERC are doing with the giant clam cultivation and coral replanting. The children enjoyed a short presentation about the local marine life and what we can do to help protect our oceans. They then got to explore the aquarium where they got to see, stone fish, sea horse, crabs, and most excitingly sea anemone and clown fish which we have learnt about in school. They also got the opportunity to see some giant grouper fish! The guide explained that one fish weighed the equivalent of 8 children. The most exciting part of the day was the touch tank! The children all got the opportunity to hold sea slugs, sea cucumbers, a variety of starfish and sea snails. To complete their visit they got to re-plant their own piece of coral which will be put back into the ocean to help maintain the sea beds.
Overall it was a fantastic trip, the children were very engaged and asked many questions to learn more. We were all very proud of them. Well done Year 1.

Year 3 Class Assembly
Y3 were very busy on Friday, they had a Class Assembly and a Showcase which was an amazing way to finish their topic on Ancient Egypt and what a show it was!
On Friday, the cheeky year 3s began their assembly with a song suggesting the teachers get sacked! We have to say, they did a great job of teaching themselves… perhaps it is true that we are no longer needed!

To prepare for their assembly, small groups of students researched an area of Ancient Egypt that they were interested in learning more about. They gathered facts and created scripts and a slide so they could present it to the rest of the primary school and their parents in assembly. It was a student led, independent enquiry – their first one – and they did very well.
This was followed by an excellent showcase, with work displayed from across the curriculum. Students gave their parents a tour of their topic work to date, from scanning QR codes to access online books they’d created, to artwork, to ‘best copies’ of fact files, diaries and poems. They are looking forward to showing the rest of the students around on Monday too.
Well done Y3

Next week, we will hold a ‘Green Day’ on Wednesday to celebrate receiving the Green Flag Award from the Eco Schools. Students can come dressed in green or add an element of green to their uniform.
Also next week, Y4 and Y6 will be hosting their Showcases of Learning for the term. I can’t wait to see what they produce.
Finally, I would like to extend a very warm welcome to a new student who joined us this week:
Lee Xue (F1)
Have a wonderful weekend.
Take care.
