From the Head of Secondary 19.11.2022

With the unexpected public holiday yesterday, it’s been a shorter than usual week at school, but a busy one, with lots going on, not least Year 6 students learning with Year 11 students about the heart, and how it works. They did this in what was literally a ‘hands-on’ way, examining cow’s hearts in detail, assisted by our IGCSE students. I was very impressed by the enthusiasm shown by the Year 6 students. They were given the option of standing back and watching from a distance, but they were all very keen to get involved. They were also a mine of information about the structure and functions of the heart and could answer every question posed by Ms Beresford! The Year 11s did a great job, explaining things so that the younger students could develop their understanding.

It was wonderful to see the different age groups working together in the Science Lab. As the year goes on we will see this happening more. Some Secondary teachers will be also be going into Year 6 classrooms to teach some lessons, and we will be having dedicated Year 6 to 7 Transition days where the younger students will get to experience Secondary over a period of consecutive days.

In previous years Year 6 have really enjoyed this, and Drama and Science lessons tend to top the popularity list! There is a serious side of course. We want our incoming students to feel confident and happy about entering this section of school as they move forward on their educational journey.  Moving between classrooms, having one teacher for each subject and managing homework, diary and lockers can be a challenge; our goal is to make the process as pain-free as possible.

Even though yesterday was a public holiday, our Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award students went ahead with their Adventurous Journey as planned and left from school, all prepared and ready, at 8am. If you are reading this at 8am on Saturday, the students will have already dismantled their overnight campsite and set out on their Day 2 trek in the Kiulu / Tamparuli area. They will return to school at approximately 3.30pm this afternoon. Many thanks to the staff: Ms McNutt, Mr Gant, Ms Dobbs and Mr Williams, and well done to the students! I am sure we will see lots of photos in a future newsletter.

Looking forward to seeing many of our community at the Beach Clean-up tomorrow, starting at 9am, at the Langkah Syabas Beach!

Have a lovely weekend
