From the Head of Primary 07.05.2022

Just two days of school but look at all the amazing learning that happened:

Next week we have three year groups out on school trips.

Y3 will take a trip back to the Mesozoic era and see ‘live’ examples of all of the dinosaurs that they will be learning about at Jurassic Land in Kiulu. F1, F2 and Y4 are off to Rasa Ria for the day.

The EYFS children will become Ranger Detectives and learn about stingless bees and partake in craft activities involving natural resources. Whereas Y4 will become Rainforest Rangers looking in depth at how the protection and conservation of our rainforests can change the path that us humans are currently on.

If you haven’t already signed your child up for the class trip, please contact the class teacher as soon as possible. As well, please check Class Dojo for reminders of what your child will need for the day.

You have one more week to decide who will be our Primary Global Citizen!

The profile of the selected student must be aligned with the school’s vision of Global Citizenship:

A global citizen understands that we are all connected, upholds the values of equality and actively contributes to the development of a better world.

Global Citizens:

  • have an awareness of the wider world and a sense of their own role within it
  • respect and value diversity
  • are committed to social justice, equality and sustainability
  • participate in the community at a range of levels, from local to global
  • take responsibility for their actions

Global Citizenship involves:

  • enquiring, discussing, thinking critically, reflecting and collaborating
  • exploring the complexity of global issues and engaging with multiple perspectives
  • applying learning to real-life issues and contexts
  • all ages and all areas of the curriculum
  • the whole school community

We invite nominations from students, staff and parents.

If you would like to nominate a student to be considered for this award, please email me: khitchen@kis.edu.my

You must include the student’s name, year group and detailed information as to why you think they should receive this award. The deadline for nominations is Friday 13th May 2022.

As I mentioned last week, the Student Council will be holding a Bric-a-Brac sale at our school Eco Car Boot sale on 21st May. Please support this by bringing in your unwanted goods for them to sell.

Finally I would like to extend a very warm welcome to two new students and their family who joined us this week:

Seonwoo and Yoonwoo in F1

Have a wonderful weekend.

Take care.

SCIENCE COMPETITION

An exciting announcement regarding our recent science competition!

We invited students to take inspiration from Theo Jansen’s ‘Strandbeests’ and try to create their own automata. We were looking for creativity, ingenuity and innovation – we asked students to document their thinking, the challenges they faced and how they overcame them and I thoroughly enjoyed watching all their video journals.

Children have been awarded certificates in school and I am excited to announce that Isabel Oui in EYFS and Madison Luping Cowan in Y5K are the winners from KIS. Their videos will be put forward to compete against children in their age group from across Malaysia. I wish them luck – it would be so wonderful to have a national winner from KIS!
