From the Head of Secondary 06.11.2021
We were delighted that this week Mr Tony Williams, our new Chemistry and Science teacher, joined the KIS team. He has spent the last five days in lessons as a co-teacher and getting to know the students and his colleagues within the department. In addition he has gained an awareness of how the students are progressing and attaining within the curriculum. Next week Mr Williams will fully take over all of his timetabled lessons. Those which are happening in the building will be accompanied by a colleague in the classroom, while Mr Williams teaches via Google Classroom. We all look forward to welcoming Mr Williams on his arrival in Kota Kinabalu as soon as is physically possible!
I have reported previously on just how active our students are despite the current situation and there does not seem to be an end to their enthusiasm and progress, not just within the formal curriculum, but within the ‘co’, ‘extra’ or ‘hidden’ curricula. The Charity Committee is flourishing. In assembly this week student leaders spoke to us about the Kinabalu Breast Cancer Support Association which they are supporting through the sale of badges. Next week, on Thursday 11th, they are hoping that all students and staff will wear something pink on ‘Own Clothes Day’ as this is the colour which is associated with breast cancer awareness. It costs 5RM to join, merits will be given to everyone who does so, and all proceeds will go to the Association to support their vital work in the community. The Charity Committee have lots of plans moving forward and we look forward to hearing more from these impressive young people.
This term I have, so far, sent out 34 Letters of Commendation to Secondary Students who have excelled in one or more areas in their academic studies. These have been awarded to students in every year group from Year 7 to Year 12 and across a wide range of subjects. Well done to those students and I certainly look forward to sending out many more in due course!
Mrs Margaret Renshaw
Deputy Principal
