Get up and Move and Fit Feb Challenges

It has been a while since I last wrote a contribution for the newsletter, and given the incredible efforts of the school community in the past 2 months in both our ‘Get up and Move’ around Sabah and Fit Feb challenges, it is probably a little amiss of me!

I must say, in following the progress of students, staff and our champions – the parents, what really stood out and left me with a wonderful feeling of pride in our KIS community, was seeing the many photos and videos of families enjoying being active together. When we reflect on the year that has been, whilst there have certainly been many notable challenges, one of the much agreed positives has been the extra time gifted to families in being together – even if some families are now looking forward to a little less time together with the return of school next week.

The importance of taking part in regular physical activity in maintaining good health, physical well-being, and not forgetting positive mental well-being as well, is tremendous. I therefore hope that these challenges as well as being a bit of fun and friendly competition amongst houses and households also served to remind us all of the importance and benefits of forming lifelong healthy lifestyle habits.

Special shout out to the mums and dads – THANK YOU for being such brilliant role models for healthy active living to your children and joining in with the challenge. Your efforts were impressive! One parent who shall remain nameless reported a story that their own children refused to take photographic evidence of them exercising in order to prevent them from logging any kilometers, and yet you still almost made it the full way around Sabah in just 2 weeks!

House points have already been added to the cumulative House Totals for the Get up and Move challenge and students below will also receive 3 individual Dojo’s/merits for their efforts in the Fit Feb challenge.

Congratulations to the following students and staff for their dedication to the Fit Feb Challenge.

Students returning to school and PE

I am sure I am not alone in saying that I am very much looking forward to welcoming the remainder of students back into school next week and getting back into PE lessons outside! As a department, we have often been impressed by the resilience and versatility shown by students (and parents!) to engage in online learning as well as their efforts to continue to improve their knowledge, understanding and skills in a range of topics from movement composition and the wonderful ‘Walk like an Egyption’ dances to striking and fielding games focusing on throwing, catching and striking.

With the return of students, PE lessons will resume with a focus on still maintaining physical distancing during lessons and following the same SOP requirements of regular hand washing including at the start and end of lessons as well as sanitizing equipment. Students will be asked to remove masks whilst participating in any physical activity but they can be worn during any breaks or when instructions are being given.

Also on the health and safety point, can I please remind parents and students that a hat is a compulsory part of the PE uniform. We noticed on the last return to school at the start of term, that a number of students (both primary and secondary) were not coming to school with their hats. Please make sure that your child has their school hat every day and it has their name clearly labeled inside. Children will not be able to participate in outside PE lessons or activities without a hat.

Have a lovely active weekend all!
