Teacher Tuesday : Mr Victor Ricardo
This week we spoke to Mr Victor Ricardo who hails from Essex, England. A teacher of Year 2, he holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Education from University of London and Bachelor of Arts in Film and Broadcast Production from London Metropolitan University.
How many years have you been teaching?
This is my fourth year as a teacher. I love this job because I feel like I am part of something that is bigger than myself, every day is a new experience and there is never a dull moment.
This is your first time teaching in Sabah, Malaysia. How are you finding it?
Sabah is beautiful! I love waking up to the sunshine every day. One of my favourite parts of living here is always being close to beautiful tropical beaches. With regards to teaching here, the children are very respectful and I am learning about their cultures and traditions which is exciting.
What makes the KIS Community special?
The KIS Community is so special because everyone works so collaboratively. Teachers, parents and the Board work in harmony to create an environment where learning is at the centre and the students are the focus.
The Year 2 class is always buzzing with learning fun! Tell us more about the 2 months ‘Outdoor Learning’ activity that started early February this year. How are your students and parents responding to it so far?
I think it is so important for children to discover that learning doesn’t only take place inside the classroom! By going outside Mrs Mullan and I are hoping to help spark curiosity about nature and the environment whilst also keeping active as we learn about habitats! The students are responding really well and we hope that this can be something that continues long term! We have also had some parents come along, they have enjoyed participating in their children’s learning and I think that adds to the home/ school partnership that KIS values.
What do you find most rewarding about being a teacher?
Teaching is a truly special job because I feel like we are equipping the future generations for a life where they can achieve amazing things!
If you could be a superhero for a day, who would you want to be and why?
Superman! He can fly!
Do you have a Sabah bucket list? Share some of it with us.
We have already ticked off a lot of things from our Sabah bucket list, I came here to experience more nature and seeing monkeys was incredible! Diving has been another fun experience which I hope I can do again!
