Teacher Tuesday: Mrs Lucy Bernard
This week we talk a member of staff who has been with us for 11 years! Mrs Lucy Bernard teaches ICT in Secondary and is the Year 13 Form Tutor.
How many years have you been teaching?
I have been teaching for 20 years
When did you join KIS?
I joined KIS as an ICT teacher in November 2006
Please describe the KIS community in three words:
Diverse, Integrated, Kind
Why do you teach?
I teach for two main reasons:
a. I am passionate about teaching young people and enjoy seeing them grow as balanced individuals
b. It gives me great satisfaction to be able to share and impart useful skills and knowledge with students in the hope that they will become better people who are able to give back to society.
What are you looking forward to most this academic year?
I look forward to seeing all of my IGCSE students perform to the best of their abilities. Our first batch of IGCSE ICT students will be taking their exams in May 2018 and I am both excited and nervous at the same time, though I am very confident that they will do well.
What is your favourite classroom resource and why?
I have many good classroom resources but my favourite is the internet. This is because the internet provides a quick and efficient way of accessing the most recent teaching materials, as well as facilitating the exchange of ideas and teaching resources with like-minded teachers of ICT from other international schools within Malaysia and elsewhere in the region.
Describe a key memory from your time teaching at KIS:
There are actually many, but the one I remember the most is when one of my AS level students was awarded the Best in the Country (Malaysia) in Applied ICT by Cambridge International Examinations. The student was from KIS’ first A-level cohort. I was proud of the achievement of the student and, in a way, I was also proud of myself for the small contribution that I had made.
If you weren’t a teacher what job would you do and why?
I would be an Analyst Programmer working at a software company and developing an expert system for education or investment purposes
KK is famed for its food, what is your favourite local dish?
There are many local dishes that I love, but my favourite is fish noodles because the ingredients are locally sourced and therefore they are almost always fresh from the market.
