The basic premise of the test is that students use their knowledge in somewhat unfamiliar situations. In addition to being challenging enough in their own right, these tests provide extra pressure in that no calculators are allowed and wrong answers can receive negative marks.

Our students enjoyed a good deal of success on the test, and we saw some outstanding results. Pride of place goes to the following:

Bronze Award:
In Year 10: Helen, Jude, Jisoo, Daniel, Roshween, Victor, John, Zachary, Ling Qian.
In Year 11: Vincent, Connor, Anson, Peter, Jimin, Amar.

Silver Award
In Year 10: Wilbur, Alex.
In Year 11: Sophia, Tina, Jonathan.

Gold Award
In Year 9: Ryan.
In Year 10: Jasmine (J), Gregoire, Hitoshi, Seyun.
In Year 11: Suraj, Renee.

Congratulations to these students, and to all the students who took part in the challenge.

Certificates will be presented during the end of term assembly.

Here below is one of the questions from this year’s challenge. It doesn’t require any real number-crunching, just a bit of sensible logic.

When 5655 is divided by a two-digit positive integer N, the remainder is 11. When 5879 is divided by the same positive integer, N, the remainder is 14. What is the sum of the digits of N?

Students, of any age, who would like to have more experience with these types of questions are warmly invited to try the weekly Senior Maths Challenge – posted in all Maths teaching rooms and online at: http://kismaths.pbworks.com/w/page/125944556/Weekly%20Maths%20Challenge

Student Lateness and Attendance – a genuine concern

Here at KIS, we have an expectation that all of our students will have an attendance of 95% or above for the entire school year. Obviously there may be exceptions to this for particular reasons: prolonged illness, sporting commitments, unavoidable travel for family reasons etc. However, on the whole, we expect our student body to be in school on time and attending their lessons, therefore giving them to best possible opportunity for progress and success in their studies.

However, over the school year so far, there has been a rather shocking decline in the punctuality and attendance of our Secondary students. Continuous reviewing of attendance figures shows that some students are on as little as around 65% attendance for the school year so far. That means on average one hour out of every three in school has been missed. There are also quite often students who arrive late enough to miss the entirety of their Tutor time – an invaluable period before lessons begin at the start of each day – and even some of their first lesson. Unfortunately these are often the same familiar faces. All of these minutes add up to hours, then days, then weeks of time missed from their education. This is not fair on the students in question, but also not fair on the Teacher, who then has to accommodate a student who may be entering midway through a lesson, therefore potentially directly affecting the lesson for the other students in that class.

Schools, Colleges, Universities, other educational establishments and employers very often require information on student attendance when requesting reports or references about said students, and as a school, we supply them with this information. Even if all other entry requirements are met (grades, evidence of ECA commitments etc), it is not unusual for one of these establishments to decline an application due to poor attendance. You wouldn’t employ somebody if you knew they were only likely to turn up on time two or three times per-week. There would very likely be somebody more reliable who could actually be trusted to arrive on time who would be employed instead. It is so very important.

Due to these worrying and emerging patterns, from the week beginning Monday 4th March there will be a Secondary Lateness Detention every Monday lunchtime which will be supervised by a member of the Secondary Leadership Team. This detention will be for 30 minutes and for anybody who has accumulated 3 unauthorised late marks over the course of a half-term. If this number of unauthorised late marks increases to 5 within a half term, or if the student failed to attend the previous detention, then it will be an hour detention after school, again supervised by a member of the Secondary Leadership Team on a Tuesday and there would also be a requested meeting with a parent or guardian to discuss attendance and punctuality.

This would take priority over any ECA commitment or prior school engagement. To enjoy the benefits of our ECA options and the other opportunities the school has to offer is considered a privilege for our students. The same can be said for trips. FOBISIA and other residential trips in particular have to be earned or such a privilege to participate could be taken away.

On the other side of this coin, it can unfortunately be easy in all of this to overlook the students who quietly turn up on time every single day and always meet (and often exceed) the expectations we have in terms of attendance and punctuality. I can assure you that this will not happen, and a real effort will also be made to recognise and reward students with truly outstanding attendance.

Here at KIS we truly want everybody to have the best possible chance of making real progress with learning, and to succeed in all of their future endeavours. Just being here on time and ready to learn is the first, and in my opinion, the most important step in facilitating this.

Mr Andrew Withers
Assistant Head of Secondary

The 2019 KIS Intermediate Maths Challenge Last week 65 students in Years 9, 10 and 11 took on the KIS Intermediate Maths Challenge – a 25 question multiple-choice test based on the UKMT (United Kingdom Mathematics Trust) tests that are administered world-wide.
