[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]I would like to start by saying a huge thank you to all those parents who attended the Primary Learning Conferences this week. As I said in last week\u2019s newsletter, it is so important to keep up to date with your child\u2019s academic, social and emotional progress and we all appreciate you taking the time to do so. If you were unable to attend for any reason, please contact your child’s class teacher to arrange a meeting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A reminder that we ask students to bring in <\/span>healthy snacks and lunches.<\/b> At KIS, we advocate for healthy eating. Good nutrition and a balanced diet help children grow up healthy. Following a healthy diet and living an active lifestyle will help your children in plenty of areas. From brain development, general wellbeing, sleeping patterns and physical strength, the benefits are vast and fruitful!<\/span><\/p>\n

Please refer to our <\/span>Healthy Eating Policy<\/span><\/a> for more guidance. Also don\u2019t forget <\/span>only Y6 students <\/b>can buy directly from the canteen. All other students MUST pre-order their food or bring their own.<\/span><\/p>\n

As last Saturday was International Women in STEM day, children in school have learnt about some famous scientists:<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Year 2 learnt about Jane Colden: a botanist. She was America\u2019s first female botanist, in the 1720s. She learnt about plants, drew them and published a book that won an award. Many people loved her book and learnt about the local plants because of her. Our year 2 children then became mini-botanists and are learning more about how to grow plants and how they disperse their seeds.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Year 3 learnt about Margaret Hamilton, who is the computer engineer who created the term \u2018software engineering\u2019. She was the head of the team who wrote the code that programmed Apollo – the space shuttle that took people to the moon and allowed them to walk on it. They then learnt about Fakhirah Khairuddin – a Malaysian lady, currently working for Tesla. Like Margaret Hamilton, she is a computer engineer. She has also worked in aeronautics, helping rockets to accelerate and for launch. She has written code and won competitions\u00a0 for her design of robotic arms. Year 3 then had a go at doing some computer coding of their own!<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

It was wonderful to hear about the diverse range of people, their careers in science and contributions to the world both in the past and currently. The people they presented were:<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n
