[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]On Thursday we were delighted to be able to hold our first face-to-face parent meeting in quite a while, with Year 12 and 13 students and parents meeting with teachers in the school hall. This is an important time for the students, for Year 12, to discuss how they are doing in this early phase of their A Level studies, and for Year 13, the teachers to report back to parents on how their children are progressing approximately six months before final exams next May \/ June. On Monday next week we have the Year 8 parent\/teacher meetings, and they will take place online via Google Meet. Students will be released from school at 2pm so that they can part in the meetings at home with their parents.<\/p>\n

As we return to school after a holiday it is always a time to look ahead to see what is coming up, after the excitement and events of the previous term. Next week, in addition to Scary School Day and a Year 11 Geography field trip on Monday, we will be waving off our U15 FOBISIA team as they head off to participate in the first inter-schools sports competition for some time. This is really exciting for them, for staff who have made it possible, and indeed for the whole community; it is another indicator that we are returning to the old normal school life.\u00a0 We wish them all the best and look forward to hearing about their adventures moving forward.<\/p>\n

Week 8: 3-7th October\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Year 7s were learning and recalling their mapwork Skills using grid reference to locate places from a map extract printed at 1:50000 scale<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Year 8K, having completed the text for the Voice over description of a cliff collapse at Hells Mouth in Devon, were then learning to use their modelling skills How and why some cliffs along coasts have a rocky flat platform in front of them, exposed and visible only at low tides.<\/p>\n

They modelled their learning this time not using plasticine nor paper, but with cake!<\/p>\n

A successful & enjoyable lesson.<\/p>\n

On Saturday 22nd, the 6th Bubbles of Hope dive day took place.<\/p>\n

If you haven\u2019t yet read about them, it is a group of teen scuba divers – some from our very own KIS community – which I created a few months ago to take a day to go on reef clean-ups.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

For the first 5 times, we went with the dive centre Downbelow but I knew I wanted to expand our partnerships with more dive centres to not only reach as many teen divers as possible but also to collaborate with all the different dive centres we are lucky to have here.<\/p>\n

\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"Scuba Junkie kindly accepted to jump on board and they led this sixth day trip.\u00a0PADI was also extremely supportive and offered to provide some merchandise for every new member. One of their main goals is to promote ocean conservation and as one of their Ambassadivers, I think that this group is a good way of doing so and getting the next generation involved at the same time.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

There were seven of us and we managed to collect 3+ \u00a0large mesh bags of trash from our reef clean-up dive, mostly consisting of plastic bottles and food packaging.\u00a0For the first time we used our surface interval to add a beach clean-up to our work and we went to a small unoccupied beach where mounds upon mounds of plastic bottles and polystyrene had been washed up the beach by the earlier high tides. Despite the limited time and workforce, we managed to collect 16 full bags of trash, a huge number in itself, but only a tiny fraction of what was on the beach – we hope to come back to continue what we\u2019ve started.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Mesh bags were replaced by cameras for the second fun dive before a delicious and well deserved lunch on the island followed by an impromptu competition of sand balls!<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It was a really great day and I am very grateful for the divers who generously used their time and energy to give back to nature which sustains life on this planet. They are the reason that hope exists for the future.<\/p>\n

I want to give a shout out to the 4 Bubbles of Hope members who are KIS students: Timothy (Y11), Jayden (Y9), Pik Yen (Y10) and Lung Ip (Y7). I very much enjoyed the day, we had a lot of fun and I look forward to more to come!<\/p>\n
