As with all schools around the world, approaching the end of the school year we say goodbye to some of our staff members. This year we wish the following staff all the best for their new adventures and thank them for their hard work and for all they have brought to our KIS community. Jamie Bevan will be moving to mainland Malaysia, Stephanie Smailes will be relocating to Bali, Rose Tooley and Curtis Baxter will be heading to the Middle East, Maggie Duffield will be enjoying her retirement, Daniel Kelly is returning to the UK with his wife and Evon Lim will be moving across to Thailand. We wish them all the very best for their future ventures and exploits.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I would also like to take this opportunity to introduce you to some of the new staff who will be joining us in the new school year.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_text_separator title=”Hannah Beresford – Biology Teacher”][vc_column_text]\"\"Hi, I teach biology and science! I worked in a school in Mongolia before coming to KK and it was very, very cold in the winter, it got down to minus 40 degrees this year! I am travelling to KK with my soon to be husband Mr Beresford. I am very much looking forward to being closer to the sea in KK, as I grew up in Cornwall in the UK, although I think the fish will be a little more exciting in Borneo! I also love playing hockey and am very much hoping the play when I get there. I am really excited to meet you all and to help discover new things in science![\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_text_separator title=”Dr Colin Dickinson \u2013 Chemistry Teacher”][vc_column_text]\"\"I will be teaching Chemistry at KIS. I am British and my home in the UK is Manchester. After teaching in the UK for ten years, I arrived in Penang, Malaysia wi th my wife, Anne and two young children in 2000, to teach. Initially we didn’t know how long our adventure would be for. But now over 20 years later, I have taught in Penang, Bangkok and since 2010 in Brunei. Both our children were educated entirely in Asia but then went to University in the UK. We have visited Kota Kinabalu a number of times and are now looking forward to being based there! In my spare time, I enjoy rugby, most sports and jungle trekking. Initially Anne will be staying in Brunei as she is midway through a contract. However, I am very much looking forward to meeting the students, parents and staff community at KIS![\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_text_separator title=”Julie Dobbs \u2013 Maths Teacher”][vc_column_text]\"\"I am really excited to be moving to Sabah and I will be joining KIS along with my children Benjy and Joni, aged 6 and 3. My family are from Thailand but this will be my first visit to Malaysia! I have been teaching mathematics for ten years and I\u2019m passionate about making maths accessible to everyone. For the past five years I have been teaching in a boarding school in England where I have also acted as an assistant housemistress. I have also been heavily involved in DofE and I am looking forward to exploring the beautiful surroundings.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_text_separator title=”Lewis Gant – Secondary History”][vc_column_text]\"\"I am very much looking forward to joining the history department and the KIS community in the upcoming academic year. By far my greatest passion is history and it has been my favourite subject since I was in school. For this reason, I cannot wait to explore its lessons and outstanding questions with the students of KIS. While all history is fascinating, I must admit that global history from the last 250 years interests me most. I grew up in a small town called Olney in Buckinghamshire, England which was valued in the Domesday book at 11 pounds. Olney although small in \u2018stature\u2019 is famous for inventing Pancake day, hosting a skirmish during the English Civil War and was home to the poet William Cowper who authored \u2018Amazing Grace\u2019 and the anti-slavery leader John Newton. Everyone has a place in history and this is what I wish my students to appreciate the most. When I am not teaching I am happiest outdoors. I have long been an advocate of holistic learning and its value in complimenting formal education outside of the classroom. As such I look forward to helping with the DofE at KIS.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_text_separator title=”Damian Grant – Business Studies”][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

\"\"I am originally from Derry City in Northern Ireland. I spent four years in the UK Civil Service before completing a PGCE in Business Education in 1995 at Sheffield Hallam University in the UK. I have worked with the British Council in Botswana, southern Africa, where I was responsible for helping to develop the education system in what continues to be a stable, fast-developing, African country. Returning to London I went on to gain 15 years\u2019 experience of GCSE and A Level qualifications. Prior to arriving at Kinabalu International School, I have been teaching at an International School in Ukraine, Kiev. Away from the classroom, my main interest is in sport and I play table-tennis and 5-a-side soccer regularly. I also like travelling and never miss an affordable opportunity to return to visit some of my favourite old haunts in Southern Africa and touch base again with life-long friends and ex-teaching colleagues in Botswana. I am excited about discovering a whole new lifestyle and culture in Kota Kinabalu. I look forward to providing my pupils with an interesting and engaging business education which will serve them well as citizens and workers in a globalised world.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_text_separator title=”Suren Mahendra \u2013 Maths Teacher”][vc_column_text]\"\"Hi, I will be moving to KIS in August to teach Maths. I am from the UK but my family originally hails from Sri Lanka, which is not too far from Malaysia. I graduated from the London School of Economics in the UK. I am currently working at an International School in Penang. I love travelling and I have worked at a few International Schools in different countries around the world, including the UK, Malaysia, the Bahamas, Portugal, Dubai, and India. I will be arriving with my two teenage daughters who will be enrolling at KIS. I love travelling, fishing, swimming and food. Penang has some very varied and amazing food. My two daughters and I also love the amazing wildlife here in Malaysia.
