Read on to discover how KIS students and staff are working hard to press on with their usual activities in unusual times. A common aspect of both of these is teamwork, and as you can see this was vital, and especially appreciated by the DoE participants. Congratulations to them for successfully completing an aspect of the award that is not meant to be easy, and wasn’t, and a huge thank you to the staff, led by Ms McNutt, who will not let something like a pandemic stop the Award scheme from going ahead!

The Year 12/13 Mock exams were successfully completed last week and a first look at the results show that the students have performed to a very high standard indeed. This is reassuring and will provide them with confidence in the run-up to the actual exams in May/June. This year we are taking a different approach to study leave, with set days and times for subject specified revision sessions during the exam period. We will be sending a letter out next week to all Year 11, 12 and 13 students and parents outlining how this will operate during the exam period. We expect all students to take advantage of what will be offered.

We are now all set for the CIS virtual visit next week. During the last 16 months, a lot of hard work has gone into preparing for this, not least in the school self-review which started in January and ran through to the end of November 2020. Members of the school community, Board members, staff, parents and students came together in teams to look closely at what we do as a school with the CIS protocol as a guide to this self-examination. The team of fellow educators have studied that very thorough document and all of the accompanying evidence, and next week we will be meeting with them through the wonders of Google to have interesting and I am sure, insightful, conversations that will contribute to the growth and development of our school.

As we all know, next Friday is the end of term. Students in Key Stage 4/5 will be departing at 12.10pm, with Years 7, 8 and 9 following at 12.20pm. The morning will be taken up with normal lessons, a virtual assembly, and tutor time and we will be asking all students to clear the lockers and take all of their belongings home.

Kind regards

Mrs Margaret Renshaw

Deputy Principal/Head of Secondary[/vc_column_text][vc_separator][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text=”Nothing Gets in the Way of the DoE Participants!” font_container=”tag:h2|text_align:center” google_fonts=”font_family:Alfa%20Slab%20One%3Aregular|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal”][vc_column_text]In April 2020 the 14 Bronze Award participants registered and then embarked on their International award solely online. Via Google Classroom and Google Meet they have all chosen, set up and logged their participation in their Skill, Community Service and Physical activity sections, adapting admirably to the situation facing them.

Many have completed their weekly participation in sessions such as tutoring younger students or even siblings for their service or in learning a new language using Zoom, apps and websites when they could not attend in person. They have been logging hours of basketball or conducting fitness sessions in their home.

Many have successfully completed one, two or even all three of those sections and as we entered MCO2.0 in Malaysia in January we only had the Adventurous Journey to complete. As soon as the SOP allowed outdoor activities in small group this AJ was arranged. Students had done many online training sessions and activities to prepare them for this but it was still a steep learning curve on Friday as we reviewed the route card taking us either around the lake or up to the summit of Bukit Padang. A 7.4km route in approximately 3hours was successfully navigated and for the “greatest team” they quickly learned the requirements of using the Google map and landscape to ensure they took the correct trail. Both teams planned their route for their day 2 walk from school, plotting either a longer expedition or a shorter exploration to complete during the hours of Purposeful Activity.

I am proud and pleased to report the successful navigation of routes and participation in all aspects of the Bronze Award. Both teams displayed all of the skills, attributes and qualities needed, showing resilience and determination.

Accounts from members of the ‘Nutters’ who were supervised by Miss McNutt.

In the beginning, training for the adventurous journey online was quite the challenge as we weren’t able to carry out the key skills first-hand (such as putting up a tent, setting up a stove, etc), but we worked with what we had and there were videos by Ms. Mcnutt that were very helpful along the way that gave us an idea of what lay ahead of us. There was some uncertainty as to whether or not our expedition was going to take place due to Covid-19 but we were lucky enough to be given the opportunity of a brand new expedition that was under the SOP and would give us the closest experience to a real adventurous journey. My favorite aspect of the journey and what I felt was most important was working and spending time with my amazing team Adriana, Leya, Dylan, and Tobias; they were great team members and we all got along very well. Instead of falling when we came across adversities, we formed unexpected bonds that made our team stronger and it reassured me to know that my team had my back. Sometimes I felt like I couldn’t walk anymore but the support and determination from my team pushed me to go on. I had a lot of fun during the two days of my adventurous journey and I look back now feeling more confident and fulfilled. – Farah

It was a good experience since the beginning and I like how we all still managed to attend DoE online classes and actually enjoyed watching videos that were useful to watch for preparation of the AJ such as how to set up the stove and putting the tent up that was uploaded by Ms.Mcnutt in the Google Classroom. We weren’t able to camp outside of the school due to the current covid-19 restrictions. Speaking about the experience, it felt so adventurous and realistic even though we were in school. My favourite aspect was all about the teamwork and spending time with my team, members Farah, Leya, Dylan and Tobias; we helped each other which made the tasks easier. There were no disagreements in the team which made the team even stronger. It seemed a little hard to do some things such as setting up the stove and reading the maps at first but having teachers that were really helpful throughout the journey, specially Ms. McNutt, Ms. Watt and Mr. Bevan, was really a good luck and my team and I were happy to have them. Overall, what I have experienced throughout all of this is survival skills which is the main thing you have to master in life. I am really grateful for participating in this AJ as it makes my life become productive and means I have a basic knowledges about survival. -Adriana A.

We started differently to the past participants, taking part in an online version of the DoE and not being able to practice key skills which would be assessed on our Adventurous Journey. These skills included setting up and taking down tents and setting up stoves. Regardless of the change in expectations, we pushed forward and learned from each of the videos which were provided by Ms McNutt with the hope that we would be able to do a physical Adventurous Journey, which we did in the end. It was tiring and confusing at first but as we progressed through our practice hike with Ms McNutt, we learnt and grew closer as a team, which is the most important part to me. Teamwork between all of us was always fun and we will all learned from each other and this experience. It was also nice to have the teachers to help us along the way, educating us about following the paths and using Google Maps to double check our route. I have to thank my team members, Adriana, Leya, Farah and Tobias, for making the tasks easier and much more enjoyable. – Dylan

The AJ practice and expedition was a wilderness experience, to say the most. We started off learning key skills for the AJ online – that is by watching explanation, tutorials videos that Ms. Mcnutt had shared with us and live videos by Ms. Mcnutt from Google Meet to show us what we could expect when we went back to physical school. We learnt so many different survival – first-hand skills from training (setting up a stove, putting up a tent, figuring out which route to take, map reading etc). We were very lucky to even have an expedition that was approved and it really was a new experience for all of us and it was the closest thing we could have got from a real AJ. One of the most memorable and especially my favourite aspects of this whole journey was the friendship and teamwork I had with my team members, Adriana, Farah, Dylan and Tobias. They were really cooperative and understanding. There was a time during the expedition where the uphill route was not my cup of tea and I was struggling a lot to catch up with them but as soon as they noticed me they waited and checked up on me to make sure I was okay, which was very lovely. My team really made me feel comfortable about being myself and during the expedition they made me realise I shouldn’t be pushing myself if I was hurting or was tired. They were all very supportive and strive to push all of us to the end of the line with such positive attitudes and I am really thankful for that. As I look back fon the two days of my adventurous journey, I feel really proud of myself for accomplishing something that I thought would be impossible to do. – Leya Sofea

The Adventurous Journey, from beginning to end was an enriching and rather bewildering experience to go through, even with restrictions put in place, both during the journey and the training preceding it. After all, once we started setting up our tents and cooking our meals, it still instilled in us a spirit of independence and truly made the whole trip a fun and interesting program. My team: Dylan, Adriana, Farah, Leya and I never had any conflict with each other, making the Adventurous Journey a wonderfully serene yet exhausting experience. – Tobias

A summary from “The Greatest Team”

Overall the Duke of Edinburgh’s adventurous journey was a fun and enriching experience. This generates the digits much more quickly than traditional algorithms, and is often used in stress-testing computers.

My Year 11 class was able to weave this into our revision programme. Although the merest mention of the word pi evokes images of circles and the like, we discovered a really unexpected link to arithmetic and probability. We took random samples of number pairs, and asked ourselves if they were co-prime (in other words, if they had a Highest Common Factor of 1). After examining the first few pairs manually, we resorted to using a spreadsheet (thanks to IT guru Josephine!) and performed a statistical analysis on our results. The outcome? We verified the amazing result that the probability that two randomly chosen integers are co-prime approaches 6/(pi squared) for an infinite set of integers. Quite why pi is involved in this is an investigation for another day.

It seemed that students in Years 7 to 10 really enjoyed the fact that they were back in school, getting involved in some interesting, hands-on mathematics.
