Elio-

The MCO has indeed been testing. We have not been able meet with friends, visit our favourite places and enjoy the magnificent open spaces that KK has to offer. It has however provided us with an opportunity to develop new skills from home (my cooking has certainly improved) and it has given us more quiet time to reflect and enjoy pastimes such as reading. I am a book worm anyway but as I begin to enjoy yet another book during the MCO I am even more thankful that I have a real love of reading to keep me entertained.

Why is reading so important?

Studies show that reading for pleasure makes a big difference to children’s educational performance. Here are 10 reasons to read!

Children who read often and widely get better at it.

After all, practice makes perfect in almost everything humans do, and reading in no different.

Reading exercises our brain.

Reading is a much more complex task for the human brain rather than watching TV, for example. Reading strengthens brains connections and builds new connections.

Reading improves concentration.

Children have to sit still and quietly so that they can focus on the story when they are reading. If the read often, they will develop the skill to do this for longer.

Reading teaches children about the world around them.

Through reading a variety of books children learn about people, places, and events outside of their own experience.

Reading improves vocabulary and language skills.

Children learn new words as they read. Subconsciously, they absorb information on how to structure sentences and how to use words and other language features effectively in their writing and speaking.

Reading develops a child’s imagination.

As we read our brains translate the descriptions we read of people, places and things into pictures. While we are engaged in a story we are also imagining how a character is feeling. Young children then bring this knowledge into their everyday play.

Reading helps children to develop empathy.

As children develop they begin to imagine how they would feel in that situation.

Reading is a fun.

Reading can be a fun and imaginative time for children, which opens doors to all kinds of new worlds for them.

Reading is a great way to spend time together.

Reading together on the sofa, bedtimes stories and visiting the library are just some ways of spending time together.

Children who read achieve better in school.

Reading promotes achievement in all subjects, not just English. Children who are good readers tend to achieve better across the curriculum.

What difference can I make as a parent?

You can make a huge difference. Parents are the most important educators in a child’s life and it is never too early to start reading together.

Building vocabulary and understanding

Learning to read is about listening and understanding as well as working out what is printed on the page. Through hearing stories, children are exposed to a wide range of words. This helps them build their own vocabulary and improve their understanding when they listen, which is vital as they start to read. It is important for them to understand how stories work too. Even if your child does not understand every word, they will hear new sounds, words and phrases which they can then try out, copying what they have heard.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend and I hope you have time to enjoy a good book.

Joanne Smith

Head of Primary[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counsellors, and the most patient of teachers’. -Charles W.
