Gregoire’s first jump of the competition at 1.36m caused the crowd of onlookers to let a cry of disbelief as he effortlessly sailed over the bar. The boys faced TBS (Kathmandu) in their second group game winning 21-17. Victor and Darrell drove the team forward with assertive offence from inside the paint and the team held their defence to win a hard fought game. Great defence lead to fast break offence which saw Ian making some good layups. POWIIS came back in contention with back-to-back three pointers but Ben and Mark responded with some three pointers of their own. The Vipers earned their place in the final and remained unbeaten.

The final saw a rematch against TBS, who came into the final game with momentum winning their previous two games by double digits. The vipers led at the end of the first quarter 6-0 as Keith’s lock down defending prevented their star player from scoring. However, TBS regained the lead early in the second quarter. The lead changed numerous times throughout the next two quarters in a game between two evenly matched teams, a fantastic game for the neutral fans spectating. Fast forward to the last six seconds of the game. Vipers down by three points coming out of a timeout. Good movement and an inbound pass created a good opportunity to tie the game. Like so many shots in the fourth quarter, the ball did not fall our way after hitting the rim. Vipers gained the rebound with two left on the clock and a last second shot just failed to fall in. Vipers boys earned second place and are looking forward to coming back stronger next year to take the gold.

While the boys were on the basketball court, the girls were battling the heat of the Phuket sun and challenging day in football. Their opening game against Sri KDU was a tough and physical match to start with but the girls showed some promise particularly in the second half as their confidence started to grow but lost 3-0. They picked themselves up for the second match against The British School of Kathmandu and started strong with lots of running and pressure from Ludivine, Freya and Margot up front. Load cheers went up as Ludivine found the back of the net for our first goal of the day which really lifted the teams spirits. Unfortunately, a lapse of concentration late in the second half saw TBS equalise and the match finished as a 1-1 draw.

In the 3rd game, the girls were up against The British Vietnamese School of Hanoi and they started very well. The defense of Alexis, Leya and Chloe in goals were under pressure a lot in the opening minutes and then it was discovered Hanoi had been playing with an extra player! When it returned to 6 v 6 the girls were able to create a few chances with Margot getting into some good positions to take some shots but unfortunately we just couldn’t find the net. Starting the second half 0-0 it was anyone’s game but it was Hanoi who took their chance and scored to win 1-0.

With no rest the girls had to take the field just 10mins later against Garden Bangkok. Hungry for their first win of the day and keen to keep their chance of a 3rd place finish alive, the girls played some good football. Adriana put a lot of pressure on the Garden defence and Freya and Margot continued to work tremendously hard combining well. Margot was rewarded for her tireless pressure, scoring to put the Vipers in front at half time. Going back on for the second half, the girls had the mindset that it was 0-0 still in order to try and keep the running going and try and put another goal away to cement the win. However, lady luck just wasn’t on the Vipers side as we were unable to convert chances while Garden were able to capitalise when a couple of loose balls found their way in front of goal. With the boys changing over to field events and the girls switching to the track the team continued to show their depth of athleticism. Freya took Silver in the 1500m while Victor, Ben and Shawn all medaled in their throwing events. Gregoire continued his strong performance from the 1st day to win Silver in Triple Jump and Bronze in Long Jump. Special mention to Margot who after coming 3rd in the 100m A heat was told it would be rerun due to a false start by another competitor. Lining up just 5mins later she didn’t have the legs to repeat the performance, robbed of a medal that she truly deserved.

By the end of the Athletics, the Vipers had accumulated a massive 23 medals; 6 Gold, 10 Silver and 7 Bronze! In spite of this, the Vipers lost these three games but played with great intensity, producing some incredible basketball.

The Vipers faced Garden International School for their last game. With some minor injuries and sore legs the Vipers started slow, conceding 8 points within the first 5 minutes. After a timeout the Vipers came back stronger, preventing GIS from scoring the remainder of the game. The excellent team defence and strong rebounding frustrated the opposition as they were unable to get the ball to the basket. The Vipers closed the gap with some outstanding passing and cutting to the basket. Their efforts were awarded with some great layup opportunities and free throw shots, but despite having a chance at the last second, the girls finished 5-8. The Vipers finished their basketball tournament with an inspiring performance and look to carry this momentum to their next basketball game in the future.

The boys started their warm up in the toughest of ways by competing in the remaining athletics events adding more strain to their tired legs. The deadlock was broken just before halftime when the ball was loose on the edge of the box and Gregoire hit a fierce drive which deflected past the goal keeper. The boys then put on a defensive masterclass led by Guy and Kiran to see the game out.

Game 3 vs. POWIIS

Our final group game came with a strange feeling as we kind of knew we would make the semi-finals but still needed a draw at least to secure it. That was only the beginning as moments later Marc doubled the lead but further to that the boys pressed and pressed with Gregoire adding the third goal. Gregoire had the ball cleared from the goal line in the final minutes from a superb header but unfortunately that was to be our last chance. Despite losing the game it could be argued that was our strongest performance.
