[vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][vc_separator][vc_column_text]As we look ahead to this half term we can already see that it\u2019s going to be another busy time in Secondary. Sports Day yesterday proved to be as exciting as ever and there will be more news about that event coming soon. Well done and thank you to Ms Watt and her team for everything they do to get us all ready for this popular event in the school calendar. On Thursday we had \u2018Scary School Day\u2019 and there will be more about this spooky day later in the newsletter. These whole school days are wonderful fun for all and are part of the glue that helps us to stick together as a community. Well done to the Primary and Secondary Student Councils and Charity Committees for all of their fantastic efforts in helping the school to have fun and raise funds for good causes at the same time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Next week we have two important academic events. On <\/span>Tuesday 5<\/b>th<\/b> it is our <\/span>Year 9 Options Talk.<\/b> Although these students have only just started Year 9, it is never too soon to look ahead to Years 10 and 11, the IGCSE years. Students have important choices to make about which subjects to take, and it\u2019s a big job when you consider the impact that this could have on future careers. For example, if a student has set his\/her sights on becoming an engineer then Physics IGCSE is pretty much a pre-requisite, in preparation later on for A Level Physics. If the ambition is for medicine, then the advice is to take Chemistry at IGCSE. However, there are in fact only a few careers that require specific IGCSEs and A Levels, and the prime concern of any student must be to choose those subjects that they think they will enjoy, can sustain for 2 years, and that they can have confidence in. The presentation and discussion will be led by Mr. Barker in the multipurpose room and will start at <\/span>2.15pm<\/b>. All Year 9 students will attend and we hope to see many parents there also.<\/span><\/p>\n

On <\/span>Wednesday 6<\/b>th<\/b> we have our Year <\/span>10 Parent\/Teacher\/Student meetings<\/b>. At this important early stage of the IGCSE years the teachers will be giving specific feedback on how the students are coping with their studies. We urge all parents to attend. Students have been busy making appointments, starting at 3.10pm, with their teachers. We aim to work collaboratively with parents to encourage and motivate our students to achieve their potential in these important courses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Homework Diary<\/b><\/p>\n

Some of our students are struggling to get their homework diaries signed by their parents on a weekly basis. Please note that this is a requirement for all students from Year 7 to Year 11 and it is one of the tools that we use to keep students on track with their homework. The diary system works very well when used properly and we ask for parental support by signing the diary every week.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Attendance and Punctuality<\/b><\/p>\n

We have seen a pleasing decrease in the number of students arriving late to school and our new system of students signing in at the gate on or after 7.50am and then signing in at the Secondary office is working. However, we cannot be complacent and ask all students to play their part by arriving at school by 7.40am. This gives them time to sort out books and equipment in lockers, lock mobile phones away and have a quick chat with friends before making their way to the tutor room for the formal start to the day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We are carefully monitoring attendance with the expectation that all students achieve a minimum of 90%. Well done to those who have not had a day off so far. Please be reminded that we have two types of non-attendance, authorised and unauthorised. As examples, unauthorised would be when a student is taken out of school for an extra holiday, and authorised would be when the student is representing a sport team at a national or international event. For planned absences of any kind we ask parents to complete a \u2018Request for Absence\u2019 Form at least 2 weeks prior to the planned absence. Unauthorised absences are counted towards the student\u2019s overall percentage of absences in a year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
