We were delighted to welcome Dr Eric Jabal and Mr John Todd from the Council of International Schools to KIS on Tuesday. Dr Jabal and Mr Todd were here to take a good look at KIS having studied our self-review report during the last month or so.<\/p>\n

Our visitors had their first real experience of the school with a guided tour from Sean Yu, Pik Ern Tong, Juah Son and Nicholas Gervasi. Our students were wonderful ambassadors for our school and they did a great job in explaining many things and answering many questions from our visitors.<\/p>\n

Rania, Jasmine, Qawiemah and Zachary looking very pleased to pass on their understanding and knowledge of MUN!<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n

The Model United Nations is now up and running at KIS. Eighteen students, ranging from year 7 to 11, elected to participate this year. Currently we are discussing the topic of deforestation and looking at where various countries stand on this subject.\u00a0 Four Year 11 students, Zachary, Rania, Jasmine and Qawiemah, have been kind enough to volunteer their services to teach the rules and procedures of a MUN Conference.\u00a0 They have demonstrated great teaching skills and have proven themselves to be inspirational mentors to the club members.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>Chapter 2: English<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This week we take a look at what Year 10 and Year 8 have been producing in Mr Darwin\u2019s English lessons.<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Year 8 Climate Change<\/strong><\/p>\n

A hot topic around the world at the moment is Climate Change. For 8K English, my students were asked to create either a brochure, a poster or a negotiated presentation on the topic. This also included a short presentation to the rest of the class during which students explained their choice of product. One of the issues that was highlighted is the problem of plastic and its effect on our environment. The class looked at the recent speeches made by young Swedish activist, Greta Thunberg and discussed the recent world-wide public demonstrations that have occurred.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Being aware of current issues is so very important for everyone, but especially young people and we benefit greatly from freely investigating and discussing them. In a world that is ever-changing, it is critical that the current generation have opportunities to understand what kind of issues they need to be aware of.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The students are proud of what they produced and the display reflects the interest and effort that they put into its creation.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_separator][vc_column_text]Year 10 English<\/strong><\/p>\n

Of Mice and Men<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Although it was written some time ago, John Steinbeck’s novella Of Mice and Men remains a classic favourite all around the world. In Year 10 English this is one of our set texts and recently my students were asked to create and then present a specific element of the book to the rest of the class, Topics included the life of the author, the concept of the American Dream, character studies and the themes of loneliness and discrimination.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Using Microsoft Power Point, students worked in small groups as they researched their particular topic and then rehearsed before they presented their work to the class. We spent two lessons listening to the information and learning more about the book and its origins. All the files are stored on a class folder on our school drive so that everyone has access to them. They will be a useful resource as we move closer to our first piece of coursework based on Steinbeck.<\/p>\n

For students to be effective learners, they also need to be proactive and properly engaged in what they are doing and understand the purpose of a task.
