[vc_row][vc_column][vc_separator][vc_column_text]KIS Golfers meet with Sabah Minister for Youth and Sport<\/b><\/p>\n

Last week, two of our top golfers Ben (9K) and Tim (10S) were invited to meet with the Sabah Youth and Sports Minister, Ginger Phoong. The young Minister, who took up the position in May, met with the boys and discussed issues such as support and funding for young athletes in Sabah. It was a very encouraging meeting with the minister optimistic he will be able to improve funding for young athletes in Sabah.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The boys were also fortunate to each be awarded RM1000 to assist them in their ongoing golfing pursuits.<\/span><\/p>\n

Apparently, the Minister even asked the boys if they could perhaps give him some golf lessons to improve his game for when he needs to entertain visiting dignitaries! With the successes that Ben and Tim have had at tournaments around Asia, he would certainly do well to take some tips from them.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”10780″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_separator][vc_column_text]Julia in Japan<\/b><\/p>\n

Recently Julia from 7K has been busy kicking sporting goals in her favourite sport of Karate. She has just returned from a trip to Japan where she took part in major tournament. Below you can read about her experience.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI started karate when I was 5 here in Kota Kinabalu. Now I am 11 and black belt. Last weekend, I attended a karate competition at\u00a0<\/span>One Borneo Mall. I got a gold medal, beating 5 girls in my age category. 3 days later I flew to Fukuoka, Japan in yet another competition. This one was the Nishimura Cup and I had been looking forward to it for the past 2 years! Seiji Nishimura is a World champion in kumite (fighting) and I was really honoured to see him for the 3rd time. The competition was scary enough on it’s own and the girls were really tough looking. I was given a scarf as a gift during the very formal opening ceremony. I had been using the excess days in Japan to train by myself, with my teacher (sensei) and we were lucky enough to find a dojo who welcomed me in one of its class. I was overwhelmed by the number of girls in my category, completely bewildered by the fact I would have to go against them and terrified of the moment I was going to enter the tatami! I didn’t get any medals but I was so glad to have been part of it though! Competing in Japan is the best feeling ever (even though it’s scary) because karate origins from Japan, so it’s a tough competition. But I loved it, and hopefully next year – if I go again – I will bring back a medal or have improved! \u201c<\/span><\/p>\n

Julia (7K)<\/b><\/p>\n

Whilst you are probably reading this, 17 KIS Stingrays from Years 3-7 will be making their way to Penampang Pool to represent KIS at the 11th Preppies Swimming Competition taking place across Saturday and Sunday.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s exciting to have KIS students heading off to represent the school against other local KK swim clubs and we are sure they will put in their best efforts throughout the competition in the hopes of achieving some personal best performances.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Other students will also be competing at the competition as they swim for their other swim clubs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Due to the timing of this trip, it is essential that we have final registrations by the end of this week in order to begin making bookings for flights. Please contact me if you have any questions.<\/span><\/p>\n

U13\u2019s FOBISIA: Registration Deadline <\/span>Friday 27th September<\/b><\/p>\n

As I mentioned last week, we are still looking for more students from Year 7 and 8 to sign up for the U13\u2019s FOBISIA Games taking place from the 23rd-27th February, 2020. Please contact me if you have any questions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
